6 Steps to Create a Spa Style Bathroom Design

As bathrooms take on a greater role in home design, they are no longer just a functional space where we brush our teeth and shower for the day ahead.  Bathrooms have become a retreat in the home, and bathroom design has evolved to reflect this change with spa style features becoming ever more popular.  The growing trend toward open showers, freestanding tubs, steam showers with built-in seating, towel warmers, and more all help to create a comforting haven within the home.  An updated, modern design combined with a soothing color scheme like white with a touch of blue, nature-inspired colors, or natural wood tones contribute to a bathroom that will rejuvenate you.

There are many design features you can incorporate into a bathroom remodeling project to help create your own personal sanctuary.  A spa style bathroom must combine style and function to create the right atmosphere for relaxation.  Here are a few areas to focus on when designing a spa style bathroom:

1. A soothing shower experience

What is more relaxing than washing away the stress of your day under a soothing shower?  Install a larger shower, a steam shower, or a home sauna like the bathroom renovation pictured here, and turn your average shower into an extraordinary shower experience.  Add to this extra features like a rainfall showerhead or a massaging shower panel to get the most out of your spa-style shower.

2. A good soak in the tub

Although showers have taken a more prominent role in the modern bathroom, for many people a bathtub is still an important feature and the best way to relax and reflect on your day.  A freestanding tub is the perfect combination of form and function as it provides a beautiful design statement in your bathroom as well as a soothing space to soak in the tub.  Place the tub near a window and add the benefit of natural light, like the bathtub pictured to the right.

3. Create a warm environment

Radiant underfloor heating will make sure you never spoil your relaxation by stepping onto a cold tile floor.  Include a radiator style towel warmer and you also have cozy, warm towels waiting for you when you emerge from the shower or bath.

4. Integrated and specialized storage

Have you ever noticed that your favorite spa is free from clutter and always has towels and other necessities easily accessible in storage niches or shelves?  Make your surroundings clutter free and more serene by including integrated storage niches and specialized vanity storage to make sure you always know where to find your supplies.

5. A place to relax

For a true spa experience, you should always have a place to sit and relax during your steam shower, or a spot to rest while applying your home spa facial.  A chair or bench can serve this purpose, but a built-in bench is the ideal solution as it is practical and a fluid part of your design.  The bench in this bathroom design in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI pictured to the right is built into the shower but also extends into the rest of the bathroom to make sure you always have a place to sit.

6. Reflect and shine

Large mirrors help open up the space in your bathroom, while also making it easier to see your post-facial complexion.  Combine this with a multi-layered lighting design to ensure you can see clearly and also create a soothing atmosphere.  Lighting for the vanity, shower and bath should be combined with cove lighting, toe kick lights, and other ambient and accent lighting.
